The new challenges and perspectives of physics

The organization of the scientific activities of the European Physical Society (EPS) is structured in Divisions, some of which are subdivided into Sections focused on specific topics, and Groups. Then there are some thematic Forums and Committees within the EPS with regard to social (physics and society, European integration, youth, equal opportunities, etc.) or societal (conferences, awards, etc.) activities.

The Forum "Physics and Society" (EPS-FPS) is assigned the task of establishing and maintaining a close contact between physicists and civil society. As such, its activity is transversal with respect to Divisions and Groups in directing the attention, formulating recommendations and soliciting actions from the EPS decision-making bodies, but also, more generally, in making scientific culture grow.

Since 2006, every two years, the EPS-FPS has organized meetings to focus on the essential points in the relationship between physicists and society; among the various subjects covered, the issue of scientific education has been discussed, in particular for physics, as well as the communication of scientific results, the presence of physicists in the labor market, the actions to be taken to improve the image of physics, the many ethical issues related to physics, and much more.

The agenda of the next meeting of the EPS-FPS, to be held in Berlin on 1-2 October 2020, on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the German Physical Society (DPG), plans to address the social dimension of science and the great challenges that physics will face by taking as time horizon the year 2050. For the preparation of this event, coordinated by Carlos Hidalgo, of the Laboratorio Nacional de Fusión of Madrid, the project "Grand Challenges in Physics and Society in the Horizon 2050" has been set up with the aim of drafting an exhaustive report that will allow to identify and explain the major challenges of physics, not only to guide radical changes in the development of societies and improve the standard of living on a global scale, but also to provide an increasingly widespread and profound basic understanding of the phenomena of nature.

In the first preparatory meeting, held in Mulhouse on 14 June, the composition of the Editorial Board has been defined which will support Carlos Hidalgo in the implementation of this project; members of EPS Divisions and Groups, members of national Societies and editors of EPS journals have been involved. The main guidelines along which to direct the project have been discussed, as well as the strategy to be used to intercept the largest possible audience of people with some scientific background, therefore not only young people looking for cultural perspectives but also those who, in different ways, are called to face scientific policy choices.

Starting from an original draft work, the members of the Board have compared various positions obtaining a more elaborate text on which to reach a decision in the next Board meeting on 29 November in Mulhouse.

The current form of the prepared document is divided into two main areas that will define the structure of the two days of the Berlin meeting: the first, entitled "Physics as global enterprise for understanding nature", is more oriented to the identification of the new frontiers of research in physics, while the second, "Physics developments to tackling major issues directly affecting the lives of citizens", focuses on the multiple applications and technologies related to the impact of physics on society. For each of the two areas a list of physical contents and a general vision have been presented, accompanied by a list of expected challenges and opportunities to be explored.

The SIF participates with attention and awareness in this project, bearing in mind the importance of the issue addressed in the current climate of scientific policy which, we recall, sometimes seems to be willing to confuse research and innovation.
