10 years of EPS Young Minds

The European Physical Society (EPS) celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Young Minds (YM) project. Born in 2010 from an idea by Maciej Kolwas, President of EPS at the time, the project has consolidated over the past ten years, becoming a pan-European network involving 32 countries and 60 student sections. Two are the project’s main objectives. First of all, to encourage the new generation active participation by providing financial support for small projects, oriented to professional development and scientific dissemination. Moreover, to provide tools and opportunities to create a network of young researchers, not only to encouragescientific collaboration, but also to promote diversity.

The graph shows the YM’s growth in these years. The success of its positive derivative is due to several factors. Among them, one is the feedback given by the national physical societies to the project, the Italian Physical Society among the first. From the beginning, in order to participate in the YM project it was enough to be a member of one of the EPS Member National Societies, and not necessarily an EPS Individual Member. In fact, although one of the goals for EPS was to increase the number of young members, it was even more so to create an active participation among the new generations, which at a young age can be more easily managed by students at the local level. Hence, the choice to strongly involve national societies. The latter factor is a geographic one: in the first phase of the project, almost all the sections were located in central Europe. In recent years it has extended to Eastern Europe, to the point of overlooking the Mediterranean. This wide distribution reflects the international spirit of YM and EPS too.

Each year YM has a budget to grant activities proposed by the sections. These include seminars, workshops, scientific outreach activities at schools or public events, and programs to support physics students during their studies. Part of these activities are managed in collaboration with the divisions and groups of EPS or with national companies. In 2019 alone, YM supported a total number of 89 grants. In this way, YM members learn to manage a project, to structure it, to promote it, to carry it out and in the end to report its costs and final evaluation. Just like in scientific national or European project.

Each year the sections are invited to participate with one delegate in the "Leadership Meeting", the annual congress of the project. This is hosted by one of the sections in rotation, which also engage in organizing an international event with 50-70 participants. On this occasion, each section presents the activities carried out during the year, and one of these is awarded the Best Activity Award. The first meeting was held at CERN in Geneva in 2011. 2020 will be the first year in which the meeting is postponed, due to the global emergency for the spread of COVID-19.

In 10 years the world has changed, and so has YM's vision. The spread of social media and the increasingly strong digitization of information have consolidated YM as a network, as a community of young physicists, helping to fill gaps and promoting scientific and cultural exchange. YM is like a catalyst, which gives space to ideas and allows its members to grow professionally and prepare them for their future career as physicists. The world of research and in general the society in which we live evolve at a very fast rhythm and in unpredictable directions. Our hope for YM is that it can remain faithful to its spirit of space for growth and aggregation, adapting to the challenges that will arise in the future .
