EPS Council 2020: non solo elezioni!

Come ben noto la Società Europea di Fisica (EPS) tiene ogni anno la sua riunione con i suoi consiglieri per presentare l'attività svolta e i piani futuri per i quali l'interazione e la discussione hanno un ruolo rilevante. Quest'anno, dopo un primo rinvio, è stato deciso di organizzare la riunione via video al fine di illustrare i punti più importanti del rapporto annuale e di attuare lo svolgimento delle elezioni per il nuovo presidente e per il rinnovo dei membri scaduti del comitato esecutivo.

L'elezione ha decretato Luc Bergé (CEA, Francia) come nuovo presidente eletto al quale diamo il nostro caldo benvenuto. Nella sua presentazione Luc Bergé ha messo in evidenza la sua seria intenzione di rafforzare la cooperazione con le società nazionali. La SIF appare nel suo elenco delle società nazionali molto attive con le quali collaborazioni più fattive gioveranno sicuramente all'EPS. Le elezioni per il comitato esecutivo hanno dato un risultato molto positivo per l'Italia che risulta essere ben rappresentata. Infatti è stato rieletto Eugenio Nappi (INFN, Bari) ed è stata eletta al suo primo mandato Roberta Caruso dell'Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, ben nota in ambito EPS per aver presieduto molto bene il comitato Young Minds. A entrambi le nostre congratulazioni e auguri di buon lavoro.

Il rapporto annuale del 2019 è stato presentato molto brillantemente dalla presidente EPS Petra Rudolf, che ha stimolato interessanti discussioni tra i 74 partecipanti. Oltre a sottolineare che le molteplici attività per conferenze e conferimento di premi sono state condotte con successo dai vari gruppi e divisioni, Petra Rudolf ha evidenziato le attività di interesse più generale che si sono concluse nel 2019 e quelle in corso o da definire nel 2020. Il 2019 ha avuto come "highlight" il rapporto The Importance of Physics to the Economies of Europe, presentato a una conferenza stampa in ottobre 2019 a Bruxelles, che sarà presentato appena possibile anche al CERN e a dei "working breakfasts" con europarlamentari. L'EPS è attualmente fortemente impegnata nella definizione delle tematiche e a fare lobbying per ottenere maggiori finanziamenti nell'ambito del prossimo Framework Programme (FP9), denominato Horizon Europe.

Nel programma EPS del 2020 c'è il workshop "Train-the-trainers", che si prefigge di preparare coloro che operano nel mondo accademico, della ricerca e dell'istruzione, a rivolgersi con approcci adeguati ed efficaci ai politici che prendono decisioni per questi settori.

L'attività più impegnativa, almeno fino a tutto il prossimo anno, è la preparazione del documento "Grand Challenges in Physics and Society" il cui contenuto sarà presentato e discusso quest'anno il 1 e 2 ottobre a Berlino, in vista della sua stesura nel 2021. Come già accennato in altre occasioni su SIF Prima Pagina, questo ambizioso documento ha l'obiettivo nel mettere in evidenza le diverse ricerche in fisica che non solo sono mirate alla conoscenza della natura e delle sue leggi, ma sono anche strumento per progredire e migliorare la qualità della notra vita. A chi legge con regolarità SIF Prima Pagina risulta chiaro che la SIF partecipa attivamente e contribuisce alle molte iniziative EPS, e quindi anche alla preparazione di questo documento, iniziative sulle quali diamo e continueremo a dare regolari aggiornamenti al lettore.

Vorrei prima di concludere ricordare, e allo stesso tempo sottolineare, che le organizzazioni come la SIF spesso si esprimono su questioni etiche e prendono posizione per condannare ogni forma di discriminazione, anche al di fuori dal mondo della scienza e della formazione. A questo proposito desidero ricordare che la SIF ha messo tra le sue news la lettera della presidenza dell'APS sull’uccisione di Floyd e Arbery e sul razzismo, lettera fortemente da noi condivisa. Poiché tutte le scienze, inclusa la fisica, sono unificanti e facilitano l'integrazione, è naturale, e soprattutto umanamente molto sentito, esprimersi per condannare il razzismo e in favore dell'inclusione.

As well known, the European Physical Society (EPS) holds its Council meeting every year to present the carried out activity and to illustrate future plans for which interaction and discussion play a relevant role. This year, after a first postponement, it was decided to organize the meeting via video to present the most important points of the annual report and to hold the elections for the new president and for the renewal of expired members of the executive committee.

The election decreed Luc Bergé (CEA, France) as the new elected president to whom we give our warm welcome. In his presentation Luc Bergé highlighted his serious intention to strengthen collaboration with national. SIF appears in its list of very active national societes because more effective collaborations with them will certainly be beneficial for the EPS. The elections for the executive committee gave a very positive result for Italy, which is well represented. In fact, Eugenio Nappi (INFN, Bari) was re-elected and Roberta Caruso of the University of Naples "Federico II", well known in the EPS field for having chaired Young Minds committee very well, was elected for the first mandate. To both our congratulations and best wishes for a succesful work.

The 2019 annual report was brillantly presented by the EPS President, Petra Rudolph, who stimulated interesting discussions among the 74 participants. In addition to acknowledge the many successful activities for conferences and prizes of the various groups and divisions, Petra Rudolf highlighted the more general activities that were concluded in 2019 and those in progress or to be defined in 2020. The main highlight for 2019 is the report The Importance of Physics to the Economies of Europe which was presented at a press conference in October 2019 in Brussels and will be also presented as soon as possible at CERN and at "working breakfasts" with members of the Europarliament. EPS is also currently heavily involved in the definition of thematics, and lobbying to obtain more funding, for the next Framework Program (FP9) called Horizon Europe.

Within the 2020 program of EPS there is the "Train-the-trainers" workshop which aims to prepare those working in research and education in dealing effectively with politicians who make decisions for these sectors.

The most demanding activity for EPS, at least until the end of next year, is the preparation of the "Grand Challenges for Physics and Society" document, whose content will be presented and discussed in Berlin on October 1 and 2 this year, in view of its drafting in 2021. As already mentioned in other occasions in SIF Prima Pagina, this ambitious document has the objective of highlighting the various researches in physics which not only aim to learn on Nature and its laws, but are also powerful tools for progressing and improving the quality of our life. To those who regularly read SIF Prima Pagina it is clear that SIF actively participates and contributes to the many EPS initiatives, and therefore also to the preparation of this document, on which we give and will continue to give regular updates to the readers.

Before concluding, I would like to remind, and at the same time underline, that organizations like the SIF often take positions on ethical issues and to condemn any form of discrimination, sometimes also outside the world of science and education. In this connection, I would like to remind you that we have put in our SIF news the letter from the presidency of APS on the killing of Floyd and Arbery and on racism, a letter whose content is strongly endorsed by us. Since all sciences, including physics, are unifying and facilitate integration, it is natural, and moreover humanly felt, to express a condemn for racism and a strong endorsement for inclusion.
