Physics teaching in schools: monitoring , boosting and bringing up-to-date!

It is well known to many readers of SIF Prima Pagina that SIF has always given a position of great importance to the teaching of physics by promoting its monitoring, incentives and updates with particular actions carried out continuously over the years by its Permanent Education Commission.

We therefore decided to dedicate an Editorial to this theme, taking inspiration from our participation in the GEO-CRUI congress, organized by a group of very authoritative experts and led by Marisa Michelini, president of GEO. First of all, let us remind you the acronyms: CRUI is the Conference of Italian University Rectors and GEO is an Interuniversity Research Center (for the Study of Youth Condition, Organization, Educational Institutions and Orientation) and is currently made up of a network of 11 Universities.

While for some details on this interesting conference, we refer the reader to an article by Marisa Michelini in the next issue of Il Nuovo Saggiatore, here we just want to briefly summarize the highlights discussed in the two round tables dedicated to physics and chemistry in which we participated in the roles of chair and discussant.

The central theme of the discussion was "Which training for teachers: Towards a model" and specific questions were addressed regarding: i) type of preparation, requirements and methods of access; ii) training areas to be considered (disciplinary, didactic, psycho-pedagogical) and the methodologies to be proposed (lessons, didactic laboratories, active traineeships); iii) methods for assessing and certifying skills; iv) university teaching for teacher training and how to structure the connection between the University and the High School together with integration with the territory.

Concerning the access to teaching, it was emphasized the importance to have a solid knowledge of the discipline, which must be also integrated with ad-hoc methodologies and psycho-pedagogical skills in general, which can be obtained through a specific post-master's course of at least 60 university credits, whose content must be properly defined for the purpose of a subsequent competition for admission to schools. The suggestions on the contents relating to the different training areas and their additions are manifold. For the chemical and physical sciences, laboratories are indispensable for understanding the laws of nature and the methodology for observing phenomena. The historical dimension is also an essential element that helps to develop analytical skills and strong critical ability.

The evaluation process was considered indispensable both in the final phase and in itinere as it must not be limited to the final product but must also include the learning process.

For the final point, university teaching for training, a strong link with the School and integration with other local entities were strongly advocated, focusing on the co-design of research paths based on laboratories and an active internship to be carried out in the classroom. Commitments from the University should go hand in hand with a greater recognition, also at the level of career advancement, of the teaching, communication and outreach activities that researchers and university teachers carry out, aspects that are very relevant at our times.

As you can clearly understand, the path of teacher training is, and surely it must be, very demanding and, in order to achieve the planned ambitious objectives, it is necessary to have a national direction aiming at injecting all the necessary resources.

In conclusion, it is important to remind that the SIF considers teachers' training as playing a key role and thus will use all possible tools for its implementation. The plan is to follow the guidelines summarized here in order to facilitate the processes so that the new generations could harvest fruits as soon as possible.
