L'"eccezionale" Congresso SIF del 2020

Quest'anno la SIF non si è rassegnata a restare inoperosa in questo difficile periodo di COVID-19 ma ha deciso, come di consuetudine e nel rispetto delle regole, di essere a servizio della nostra comunità nel miglior modo possibile. Ha affrontato quindi la sfida di organizzare il suo Congresso annuale utilizzando una piattaforma digitale con una veste grafica progettata per tener conto delle nostre esigenze e per essere il più aderente possibile al formato del nostro Congresso. Inoltre, per evidenziare la particolarità di un congresso che si tiene in "nessun luogo", a ognuna delle otto classi virtuali in cui si tenevano le presentazioni è stata associata un'immagine di un'antica aula magna universitaria.

Ho usato il termine sfida in quanto gestire 7 sezioni parallele, consegnare i numerosi premi, tra cui il prestigioso Premio Fermi, e tenere l'Assemblea dei Soci come da tradizione – tutto via piattaforma digitale – presentava delle incognite e ha richiesto un impegno molto diverso rispetto al passato. È proprio questo sforzo che rappresenta l'eccezionalità ma il risultato è stato sorprendente e di soddisfazione.

Infatti nei giorni 14-18 settembre si sono avute più di 1400 registrazioni al Congresso, numero da confrontare con i 500 iscritti ai congressi non virtuali. Sono state date 10 relazioni generali e 220 relazioni su invito, tutto questo con 135 ore di streaming. Abbiamo avuto anche tre relatori stranieri su argomenti di rilevanza internazionale, come storia della fisica, editoria scientifica e futuro della ricerca: uno che ci ha parlato di interessanti studi storici su Isaac Newton, uno che ci ha parlato della rivista Nature e uno della recente strategia per la fisica delle particelle. Colgo l'occasione per segnalare che proprio sulla rivista Nature è apparso un breve articolo su questa recente strategia, scritto da Fabiola Gianotti e Gian Francesco Giudice.

Per quanto riguarda le comunicazioni presentate al Congresso, queste sono state molto numerose, circa 600, e si trovano caricate su una pagina web come presentazioni con sonoro. Un gruppo di colleghi sta attualmente aiutando il Consiglio di Presidenza per selezionarne circa il 20% da pubblicare su Il Nuovo Cimento. Avremo tre fascicoli dedicati al Congresso e questi costituiranno anche un bel ricordo per questa esperienza unica che merita da parte nostra un segnale di riconoscenza per l'entusiasmo mostrato dai partecipanti.

Nell'Assemblea Generale dei Soci è stato presentato il resoconto annuale delle attività della SIF del 2019 e dei primi otto mesi del 2020 insieme ai piani futuri.

Voglio concludere sottolineando che anche quest'anno il Comitato Pari Opportunità (CPO) della SIF è stato molto attivo e si è ingegnato a realizzare due iniziative molto originali e apprezzate. Una riguarda una serie di brevi interviste a numerose colleghe su come hanno vissuto il periodo di COVID-19; tuttora queste interviste sono sulla pagina web della SIF e ne consiglio la visione. La seconda iniziativa è stata quella di dedicare le sette aule virtuali a sette scienziate donne; nel preparare le biografie per la nostra pagina web ci siamo resi conto che in passato purtroppo queste scienziate non hanno sempre avuto la visibilità che si meritavano.

Concludo questo editoriale esprimendo un sentito ringraziamento al gruppo di lavoro che ha realizzato il 106° Congresso SIF ma soprattutto ai partecipanti che hanno mostrato entusiasmo per questo Congresso, in particolare i giovani che hanno preparato numerose e interessanti comunicazioni.

This year, the SIF has not accepted to remain idle in this difficult period of COVID-19 but has decided, as usual and in compliance with the rules, to offer its service to our community in the best possible way. Our Physical Society has thus faced the challenge of organizing its annual Congress using a digital platform with a graphic layout designed to take into account our needs and to be as close as possible to the format of our Congress. In addition, to highlight the particularity of a Congress that is held in "nowhere", to each of the eight virtual classrooms, in which the presentations were made, we associated an nice photograph of an ancient university lecture hall.

I used the term challenge since handling 7 parallel sections, delivering our numerous awards, including the prestigious Fermi Prize, and holding as required the meeting of the SIF Members – all via digital platform – presented some unknowns and required a very different commitment as compared to the past. It is precisely this effort that represents the exceptionality, but the result was surprising and satisfying.

In fact, from 14 to 18 September there were more than 1400 registrations at the Congress, number to be compared with the 500 usually registered participants in non-virtual congresses. There were 10 general talks and 220 invited talks, all in 135 hours of streaming. We also had three foreign speakers on topics of international relevance, such as the history of physics, scientific publishing and the future of research: one who presented interesting historical studies on Isaac Newton, one who told us about the journal Nature and one about the recent strategy for particle physics. I take this opportunity to bring your attention that a short article on this recent strategy written by Fabiola Gianotti and Gian Francesco Giudice which recently appeared in Nature.

As far as the communications presented at the Congress are concerned, these were very numerous, about 600 and can be found on our web page as presentations with sound. A group of colleagues is currently helping us to select about 20% of them to be published in Il Nuovo Cimento. We will have three issues dedicated to the Congress and these will also represent a good memory for this unique experience that deserves to be well remembered in particular for the enthusiasm shown by the participants.

At the General Assemply of SIF Members, the annual report of the activities of the SIF for 2019 and the activities of the first eight months of 2020 were presented together with the future plans .

Before concluding I like to emphasize that also this year the SIF Equal Opportunities Committee (CPO) has been very active and put forward two very original and appreciated initiatives. One concerns a series of short interviews with numerous colleagues on how they lived the COVID-19 period; these interviews are also now available on the SIF web page and thus I suggest to take a look at them. The second initiative was to dedicate the seven virtual classrooms to seven female scientists; in preparing the biographies for our web page we realized that in the past, unfortunately, these scientists did not always have the visibility they deserved.

I conclude this editorial by expressing my heartfelt thanks to the working group that organized the 106th SIF Congress but above all to the participants who showed enthusiasm for this Congress, in particular the young people who prepared numerous and interesting communications.
