Riunione del Council EPS 2021: il passaggio di testimone tra i due presidenti

Come da consuetudine nella settimana che segue la Pasqua ha luogo la riunione del Council della European Physical Society e quest'anno i partecipanti online hanno assistito al passaggio di testimone tra il presidente uscente Petra Rudolf e quello entrante Luc Bergé.
In questo editoriale desidero quindi evidenziare, se pur brevemente, i punti più salienti delle relazioni date da entrambi in occasione della riunione del Council.

Petra Rudolf molto brillantemente ci ha illustrato quanto è stato fatto nel 2020. L'attività della società EPS, ad eccezione delle conferenze, è progredita con successo, nonostante la difficile situazione creata dalla pandemia da COVID-19, e questo grazie al suo impegno e a quello della squadra del personale EPS a Mulhouse. I punti più rilevanti della relazione di Petra Rudolf includono: i) il ruolo della ricerca e innovazione per la ripartenza post COVID-19; ii) la promozione di azioni volte a ottenere finanziamenti per il programma INTR, che ha lo scopo di aiutare ricercatori provenienti da paesi in via di sviluppo a ritornare nei laboratori europei dove hanno conseguito il loro dottorato; iii) iniziative di tipo "lobbying" per ottenere più finanziamenti per la ricerca nel programma europeo Horizon Europe; iv) il successo del workshop "Train the trainers"; v) iniziative per promuovere la partecipazione a progetti europei del tipo "Citizen Science". Per quest’ultimo punto c’è stata una relazione dedicata molto informativa e intendo ritornarci in un prossimo editoriale.
Per quanto riguarda le attività in corso ci ha ricordato l’avanzamento della stesura del documento "Grand Challenges-Forum Physics and Society” e che è programmato per il prossimo maggio un workshop sul "Codice di Comportamento" nell'ambito dei progetti scientifici.

Sono stata molto lieta di apprendere, dalle comunicazioni di Petra Rudolf, che Luisa Cifarelli è stata molto meritatamente premiata con la medaglia Gero Thomas 2021. Questo prestigioso riconoscimento le è stato dato per il suo straordinario impegno nella ricerca e nelle organizzazioni scientifiche, e nell'EPS in particolare, per la quale ha anche creato il programma "EPS Historic Sites".

Il passaggio di consegna al nuovo presidente eletto Luc Bergé è stato preceduto da sentite e sincere parole di ringraziamento e di riconoscimento dell'operato di Petra Rudolf che sarà fonte di ispirazione anche nei prossimi anni.

L'intervento del nuovo presidente Luc Bergé, a cui è stato dato un caldo benvenuto, si è incentrato sulle novità che intende introdurre durante il suo mandato. Tra queste desidero menzionare: i) l’intenzione di rafforzare la cooperazione con le società nazionali; ii) un piano per rafforzare i legami con divisioni e gruppi EPS; iii) un piano per organizzare un EPS forum; iv) l’intenzione di sviluppare azioni all'interno della tematica della fisica per lo sviluppo; v) un piano per attrarre nuovi membri associati e in particolare sviluppare legami con l'industria. Ci ha inoltre ricordato che IUPAP & IYBSSD organizzeranno, congiuntamente con EPS, "The World Conference on Basic Sciences and Sustainable Development", nei giorni 20-22 settembre 2022 a Belgrado.
Il piano di lavoro di Luc Bergé è certamente molto ben delineato e impegnativo.

È intenzione della SIF fare buon uso di questo programma e in particolare dell’iniziativa volta a rafforzare, o meglio ampliare, i legami con l’industria che operano nel settore della fisica.
In un mondo che cambia e si evolve rapidamente è importante per tenere il passo efficacemente partecipare ad azioni sinergiche che consentano di raggiungere gli obiettivi.

As is customary, the meeting of the Council of the European Physical Society took place in the week following Easter and this year the online participants witnessed the passing of the baton between the outgoing president Petra Rudolf and the incoming president Luc Bergé.
In this editorial I would therefore like to highlight, albeit briefly, the most salient points of the reports given by both of them at the Council meeting.

Petra Rudolf very brilliantly illustrated to us what has been done in 2020. The activity of the EPS society, with the exception of conferences, has progressed successfully, despite the difficult situation created by the COVID-19 pandemic, and this thanks to her commitment and that of the EPS staff team in Mulhouse.
The most relevant points of Petra Rudolf's report include: i) the role of research and innovation for post-COVID-19 restart; ii) the promotion of actions aimed at obtaining funding for the INTR program, to help researchers from developing countries to return to the European laboratories where they obtained their doctorates; iii) "lobbying" initiatives to obtain more research funding in the European Horizon Europe program; iv) the success of the "Train the trainers" workshop; v) initiatives to promote participation in European projects within the "Citizen Science" framework. For this last point there was a very informative dedicated report and I intend to return to it in a future editorial.
As for the ongoing activities, she reminded us of the progress of the drafting of the document "Grand Challenges-Forum Physics and Society" and that a workshop on the "Code of Conduct" in the context of scientific projects is scheduled for next May.

I was very pleased to learn, from the information given by Petra Rudolf, that Luisa Cifarelli was very deservedly awarded with the 2021 Gero Thomas medal. This prestigious recognition was given to her for her extraordinary commitment in research and scientific organizations, EPS in particular, for which she also created the “EPS Historic Sites” program.

The handover to the new elected president Luc Bergé was preceded by heartfelt and sincere words of thanks and recognition of Petra Rudolf's work, which will also be a source of inspiration in the coming years.

The speech by the new president Luc Bergé, who was warmly welcomed, focused on the innovations he intends to introduce during his term. Among these I want to mention: i) the intention to strengthen cooperation with national societies; ii) a plan to strengthen links with divisions and groups of EPS; iii) a plan to organize an EPS forum; iv) the intention to develop actions within the theme of physics for development; v) a plan to attract new associate members and in particular develop links with industry.
He also reminded us that IUPAP & IYBSSD will jointly organize with EPS "The World Conference on Basic Sciences and Sustainable Development", on September 20-22, 2022 in Belgrade. Luc Bergé's work plan is certainly very well defined and demanding.

It is SIF's intention to make good use of this program and in particular of the initiative aimed at strengthening, or rather broadening, the links with the industry operating in the physics sector.
In a world that is changing and evolving rapidly, it is important to effectively participate in synergistic actions that make it possible to achieve objectives to keep pace.
