The Aria project crosses the surface boundary of the Seruci mine shaft

For the Aria project Thursday, April 15, 2021 is an important and symbolic date. A date to be highlighted on your calendar because for the first time since the start of the project one of the central modules has crossed the surface boundary and, albeit for a few meters (about 30), traveled towards the bottom of the shaft of the Seruci mine, managed by CarboSulcis S.p.A., which will host the plant in its entirety. More specifically, the activity consisted in the simulation of the transport and positioning of a central module (of 12 m length and about 2.5 t weight ) that will be part of the final column of Aria (composed of 28 central modules plus the "top" and "bottom" modules, for a total of 350 m in height).

The aim of the operation was to check the procedures drawn up by the two project partners (the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics and CarboSulcis) and optimize them before the actual installation process which is expected to take place next year. During the operation there were some minor technical and organizational issues, which will be fixed, but overall the process was very smooth and well thought out.

In the subsequent operations, there will be another movement of the module (on a date yet to be defined), where we will attempt to reach the bottom of the well (-200 m asl), cross the 10 support stages currently installed and finally simulate the final positioning on three of these platforms.

This second phase will provide information that will be very valuable for the continuation of the activity, which despite being a period heavily complicated by COVID-19, is proceeding neatly.

Symbolically we can say that a “new baptism” of the mine shaft, which up to now has only seen the in and out of miners, coal and equipment linked to typical mining activities, has been carried out. With this step, a new era for the infrastructure has started. It will be converted into an innovative and avant-garde plant, a unique plant of its kind, in which two "worlds" - the world of mining and that of cryogenic distillation - so distant from each other, have found a way to coexist and continue their activities during what is expected to be a new life for the entire infrastructure.

The activity was organized and conducted, from Aria, by Federico Gabriele (INFN LNGS), Aria Technical Coordinator and responsible for the operation, Walter Bonivento (INFN Cagliari), Aria Project Leader, and two young local engineers, Arianna Steri and Valentina Cocco (both from the INFN Section of Cagliari); from CarboSulcis, by Stefano Farenzena, Contact Person for the Aria Project and responsible for the operation, Nicola Lami, wells Team Leader, and the CarboSulcis mining crew dedicated to the logistics of the operation.
