– Abbiamo avuto circa 1200 iscritti.

107th SIF Congress: on an IT platform but special!

The 107th SIF Congress has just ended. This year the organization of this Congress, our second on an IT platform, benefited from the experience of last year, the starting point for the improvements adopted for this edition in 2021. It was a very special Congress due to the commitment of everyone, the SIF staff, the speakers and the participants.

We are convinced that the event was overall successful, despite it was not held in presence. But let's see briefly, in the following points, the reasons for our satisfaction.

– We had about 1200 registrations. As usual, the program was full of beautiful talks. There were 10 plenary talks, 252 invited talks in the seven parallel sections and 652 contributions, the latter not in streaming. About 25-30% of the submitted contributions will be chosen for publications in issues of Il Nuovo Cimento devoted to this congress.

– In the opening ceremony we officially announced the winners of our awards by showing their photos. The award dedicated to Laura Bassi, strongly supported by our CPO (Committee for Equal Opportunities), was delivered for the first time. The winners of the prestigious Fermi prize, Elena Aprile and Patrizia Caraveo, and of the Occhialini prize of SIF-IOP, Marialuisa Aliotta, gave short but very inspiring talks.

– The Italian Association of Physics Students (AISF) organized a very interesting session in which the speakers were able to combine the issue of the professional opportunities for young physicists without neglecting the scientific ones, addressing various topics.

– A round table, organized by our CPO (committee chaired by SIF Councillor Sara Pirrone), entitled "Investing in women: an opportunity to be developed within the Recovery Plan" was held. The speakers were Elena Bonetti (Minister for Equal Opportunities and the Family), Stefania Brancaccio (President of the Women's Entrepreneurship Committee of Naples), Daniela Farina (Director of the Institute for Plasma Science and Technology of the CNR of Milan), Barbara Poggio (Vice-Rector on Equity and Diversity Policies of the University of Trento), Antonella Polimeni (Rector of the Sapienza University of Rome) and Agnese Pini (Director of the newspaper La Nazione) who acted as moderator. The interventions covered various aspects and criticalities concerning both the academic and research world, and more generally the world of work.

– A round table on "Physics and the green revolution" was held. I personally gave a short introduction to inform that a document on this topic will soon be released, jointly prepared by many scientific societies in the world and coordinated by the IOP society. Giorgio Graditi (Director of the Energy Technologies and Renewable Sources Department of ENEA), Rosario Corrado Spinella (Director of the Department of Physical and Technological Sciences of Matter of CNR) and Antonio Zoccoli (President of INFN) contributed as speakers and Francesco Romanelli (University of Rome Tor Vergata and ENEA) moderated the discussion. It became clear that the physical sciences have given and will certainly give also in the future a significant boost to innovation in production processes.

– We offered the vision of a performance for the theater "E=mc2 – The physics show" (by and with Marina Carpineti, Marco Giliberti, Nicola Ludwig of the University of Milan). The show, conceived in particular for schools, deals, in a witty and playful way, with the change in the general attitude of the public towards science and scientific communication in the media.

As you can well figure out, in other articles of SIF Prima Pagina and in other SIF publications we will provide some more insights on this Congress and in particular on the round tables that really deserve special attention.

To conclude, I would like to express my wish that the famous saying "there is no two without three" does not hold true for the SIF Congress and I hope to see us all in person in Milan in 2022!
