The Nobel Prize medal in Physics 2021 to Giorgio Parisi: delivery in Rome

The ceremony for the awarding of the 2021 Nobel Prize medal and diploma to Giorgio Parisi was held in Rome on 6 December 2021 in the Aula Magna of the Rectorate of Sapienza. Since 2020, due to the situation created by COVID-19, the traditional ceremony in Stockholm for the delivery of the medal by the Swedish and Norwegian (for the Peace Prize) royalty has been replaced by ceremonies organized by the embassies in the countries of Nobel Prize winners. Then for Giorgio Parisi the medal and the Nobel Prize 2021 diploma were awarded by H.E. the Swedish Ambassador to Rome Jan Bjorklund.

Since this is the first time that I have participated in a Nobel Prize award, I am unable to make a comparison with traditional ceremonies but I can certainly say that the event was very well organized. Overall, the ceremony was very engaging and exciting, although it is natural to attribute the emotion mainly to the pride of having Giorgio Parisi as a winner. In any case, the atmosphere created during the ceremony certainly contributed a lot to amplify the emotions.

The ceremony took place at the presence of a varied audience, made up of friends and relatives, colleagues, and authorities and representatives of various institutes and academies who occupied all the seats, available according to current regulations. The streaming broadcast also allowed the many strongly interested in the event to participate remotely.

The welcome greetings from the Rector of Sapienza University of Rome Antonella Polimeni were followed by institutional greetings from the Mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri and the Minister of University and Research Maria Cristina Messa. Furthermore, Enzo Marinari, renowned professor at Sapienza, reminded us of the context in which the prestigious recognition of the Swedish Royal Academy matured.

The Swedish Ambassador briefly recalled the history of the Nobel Prize "For the greatest benefit to humanity" and thanked the municipality of Sanremo, where Alfred Nobel died, for donating the beautiful flowers placed on the stage. He recalled that this is the most prestigious award ever and Giorgio Parisi is the twenty-second Italian to be awarded and the sixth for Physics. There were musical interludes, with a quartet of stringed instruments, between the various interventions and each speaker was announced with trumpeters playing André Danican Philodor's Nobel Fanfare.

Roberto Gualtieri, after praising Giorgio Parisi for his great research, told us he was wondering if his Nobel Prize-winning complexity theory could be used to understand traffic in Rome! After the delivery of the medal and diploma, Giorgio Parisi, very touched, delivered his very emotional speech in which he began by stating that he was dedicating this award to Nicola Cabibbo, his mentor and source of inspiration. The emotion of all of us then skyrocketed when at the end of the ceremony we all stood up to applaud him and then we sang the national anthems of Sweden and Italy.

About 50 guests were present at the dinner at the residence of the Ambassador of Sweden and I felt very honored to have been one of them, invited to represent the SIF. Even in that case, the organization was impeccable and top class. The Norwegian Ambassador was seated at our table and he also entertained us well by telling us about some of his experiences in the various countries where he worked.

In addition to an excellent dinner, there were intervals with music played on the piano and short speeches on the occasion of various toasts by the hosts and some of the guests. The musical intervals included the singing in the Swedish-language of "Luciasången", namely "Sul mare luccica (Santa Lucia)" about which we were jokingly told that this had been written in Sweden and then translated into Italian!!

Among the interventions of the diners, let me metion the one by the Mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri. He informed us that Rome also awarded Giorgio Parisi a very important prize, which, to make a joke, he defined as important or perhaps more important than the Nobel Prize. This is the Sympathy Prize which in November 2021 was awarded to Giorgio Parisi in the Campidoglio. This award is also very much deserved by Giorgio who was recognized as a very brilliant guy in everything, even for his sympathy!

Warm wishes for happy holidays!
