Nel 2022: il 125° anniversario della SIF e due Anni Internazionali proclamati dalle Nazioni Unite

Con la partenza di questo nuovo anno, oltre a rinnovarvi l'auspicio di tanto successo e serenità, desidero attrarre la vostra attenzione su tre cose, che ritengo degne di nota, che riguardano o coinvolgono la SIF proprio nel 2022.

Innanzitutto voglio ricordarvi che la SIF quest'anno ha un compleanno speciale, il 125°. Come potete ben vedere il nostro logo SIF, che utilizzeremo per tutto il 2022, è stato rielaborato per ricordare questa importante ricorrenza. Inoltre immagino che i nostri lettori si aspettino che in questa occasione che si faccia un aggiornamento del rapporto "120 anni e oltre", redatto in occasione del 120° anniversario. È nostra intenzione preparare questo aggiornamento anche per poter fare un bilancio degli ultimi 5 anni, tre dei quali caratterizzati purtroppo dalla presenza della pandemia COVID-19. Quest'ultima ha rallentato solo alcune delle nostre attività, certamente non quelle editoriali. Non avendo potuto purtroppo trovarci in presenza come in passato o avendolo potuto fare solo in poche occasioni, non siamo stati in grado di attuare pienamente tutte le nostre iniziative e di avere lo stesso speciale entusiasmo che avremmo avuto stando insieme fisicamente, e non virtualmente. In ogni caso c’è materiale per aggiornare il nostro rapporto e ve ne consiglierò la lettura quando sarà pronto verso la fine dell'anno.

Nonostante questo periodo molto particolare sono convinta che, come ogni anno, anche per il 2022 le vostre agende siano già piene di impegni e quindi, prima di rischiare di non trovare più spazio, desidero ricordarvi di segnare la data di un evento speciale che stiamo organizzando a Villa Monastero a Varenna sul lago di Como, nei giorni 20-21 giugno 2022. È un simposio internazionale, intitolato "Passion for Science – Facing Global Challenges", che si concentrerà sul ruolo della scienza fondamentale, la fisica in particolare, per lo sviluppo sostenibile. Questo evento è organizzato in collaborazione con l'Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) e rappresenta un contributo che la SIF intende dare per celebrare l'"Anno Internazionale delle Scienze di Base per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile" (IYBSSD) che è proprio il 2022.

L'iniziativa IYBSSD è stata ufficialmente proclamata nei primi giorni di dicembre 2021 dall’Assemblea Generale delle Nazioni Unite. Questa iniziativa, particolarmente significativa per noi, è stata promossa dall’Unione Internazionale di Fisica Pura e Applicata (IUPAP), che celebra il suo centesimo anniversario proprio nel 2022, ed è organizzata sotto gli auspici dell'UNESCO.

Poiché condivido pienamente lo spirito dell'iniziativa, vorrei qui riportare una riflessione del Presidente della IUPAP Michel Spiro: "Se il COVID-19 ci ha insegnato qualcosa, questa è prima di tutto l'importanza e l'impatto della ricerca. È quindi opportuno che il 2022 evidenzi il ruolo della scienza di base in sostegno allo sviluppo sostenibile". Si prevede che l'IYBSSD verrà avviato con una conferenza di apertura all'UNESCO a Parigi nel luglio 2022 e sarà concluso con una cerimonia di chiusura al CERN un anno dopo.

Nelle due giornate 20-21 giugno 2022 in cui si terrà il nostro evento a Varenna, che sarà anche trasmesso in streaming, gli oratori che saranno presenti, tutti di altissimo livello, illustreranno come i vari istituti di ricerca, le società scientifiche e i grandi laboratori internazionali nell'ambito della fisica, come il CERN, la cui missione scientifica è quella di comprendere la natura a un livello fondamentale, possano contribuire e promuovere l'elaborazione di politiche sostenibili per lo sviluppo tecnologico e in generale per il bene comune.

Aggiungo infine, e vi rimando a un altro articolo su questo numero di SIF Prima Pagina, che il 2022 è stato inoltre proclamato "Anno Internazionale del Vetro" dalle Nazioni Unite (IYoG 2022). Anche in questo caso la SIF contribuirà alle dovute celebrazioni. Il focus è diverso ma il tema del vetro, sotto vari punti di vista, da quello scientifico a quello artistico, è sicuramente affascinante.

With the starting of this new year, in addition to renewing the hope for success and serenity, I would like to draw your attention to three things, worth noticing, that concern or involve the SIF in 2022.

First of all I want to remind you that the SIF this year has a special birthday, its 125th. As you can see, our SIF logo, which we will use all along 2022, has been reworked to commemorate this important birthday. Furthermore, I imagine that our readers expect that on this occasion we will make an update of the report "120 years and beyond" which was written for the 120th anniversary. It is our intention to prepare this update and this will also allow us to take stock of the last 5 years, three of which unfortunately characterized by the presence of the COVID-19 pandemic. The latter only slowed down some of our activities, certainly not the editorial ones. Unfortunately, having not been able to work at presence as in the past or having been able to do so only on a few occasions, we have not been able to fully implement all our initiatives and to have the same special enthusiasm that we would have had by being together physically, and not virtually. In any case, there is material to update our report and I will recommend reading it when it is ready, namely towards the end of the year.

Despite this very special period, I am convinced that, like every year, your agendas are already full of commitments for 2022 and therefore, before risking no more space, I would like to remind you to mark the date of a special event that we are organizing at Villa Monastero in Varenna on Lake Como, on 20-21 June 2022. It is an international symposium entitled "Passion for Science – Facing Global Challenges" which will focus on the role of fundamental science, physics in particular, towards sustainable development. This event is organized in collaboration with the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) and represents a contribution that the SIF intends to give to celebrate the "International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development" (IYBSSD) which is precisely 2022.

The IYBSSD initiative was officially proclaimed in early December 2021 by the United Nations General Assembly. This initiative, particularly significant for us, was promoted by International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), which celebrates its 100th anniversary Anniversary precisely in 2022, and the international year is organized under the auspices of UNESCO.

Since I fully share the spirit of the initiative, I would like to report here a reflection by IUPAP President Michel Spiro: "If COVID-19 has taught us anything, this is first of all the importance and impact of the research. It is therefore appropriate that 2022 highlights the role of basic science in supporting sustainable development". The IYBSSD is planned to be kicked off with an opening conference at UNESCO in Paris in July 2022 and to be concluded with a closing ceremony at CERN a year later.

In the two days 20-21 June 2022 in which our event will be held in Varenna, to be also broadcasted in streaming, the speakers who will be present, all of the highest level, will illustrate how the various research institutes, scientific societies and large laboratories in the field of physics, such as CERN, whose scientific mission is to understand nature at its fundamental level, can contribute and promote the elaboration of sustainable policies for technological development and in general for the common good.

Finally, I would like to add, and I refer you to another article in this issue of SIF Prima Pagina, that 2022 was also proclaimed "International Year of Glass" by the United Nations (IYoG 2022). In this case as well the SIF will contribute to the due celebrations. The focus is different but the theme of glass, from various points of view, from the scientific to the artistic one, is certainly fascinating.
