Are the disciplines of the STEM area more attractive today?

It is always interesting to read the AlmaLaurea reports carefully and not only in the occasion of the public events organized for their presentation. And it is precisely to keep alive the attention on the university education, on which SIF is very actively involved with its Permanent Education Commission (CDP), chaired by Elisa Ercolessi, that I have decided to report and comment in this editorial some data from the AlmaLaurea reports. In fact, it is clear to all countries what is the economic benefit that comes from the increase in university graduates in our society and moreover how important it is to try to increase graduates in the sectors in which there is strong demand, especially now in Italy in connection with the projects of the PNRR.

The starting point is to remind the reader of the 2020/21 data concerning the distribution of enrolled students within the different disciplinary areas. There was a prevalence of university students from the economic, legal and social area (34.0%), followed by the STEM area (29.9%), the artistic, literary and education area (19.8%) and finally from the health and agro-veterinary (16.3%) area. Unfortunately, there is a contraction in registrations, a feature which characterized also the early 2000s and stopped only in recent years. For the next few years, according to our ISTAT data, there will be a very slight increase of the nineteen-year-old population, due in particular to the immigration flows, and this could have positive effects on university enrollments in the future.

As physicists we are certainly interested in the STEM area, to which we belong, and for these disciplines it is important to highlight how the enrollments evolve in time also in comparison with the other sectors. In the 2021 report one can find an interesting plot displaying the number of registrations by disciplinary area starting from the year 2003/2004, used as a reference point. A careful examination of that plot highlights very interesting results. Compared to the academic year 2003/04 the STEM area shows an increase of 15%. In fact, the number of registrations in the STEM area, to which physics also belongs, after an initial decline, has gradually increased since 2014/15 and in particular this increase is positioned at higher levels than in other areas. The health and agro-veterinary area, after the increase in registrations detected in 2014/15, has seen a downsizing of registrations, up to the slight recovery that began in 2017/18 and which in 2020/21 brings it to + 2% compared to 2003/04. Surely the health emergency of 2020 has strongly highlighted the importance of this sector, which has already been largely understaffed for some time. The artistic, literary and education area and above all the economic, legal and social area are at lower levels but, since 2014/15, they show improving trends although in 2020/21 they are still below the quota of students enrolled in 2003/04 (at -4% and -15%, respectively).

Women, who for some time have made up more than half of graduates in Italy, represent 58.7% of the total among those in 2019, and in the last ten years this appears to have a stable trend. However, the strong differentiation in the composition by gender of the various disciplinary fields should be emphasized. In the first level courses, women constitute the strong majority in the teaching (93.8%), linguistic (84.2%), psychological (79.9%) and medical-health (71.0%) groups. Women, on the other hand, are still a minority of the engineering (26.4%), scientific (26.7%) and sport education (34.0%) groups and this distribution is also similar within the two-year master's courses. In single-cycle master's courses, women clearly prevail in all disciplinary groups: from 95.4% in the teaching group to 54.7% in the medicine and dentistry group.

These data must make us think but they must also stimulate us to commit ourselves to give our best contribution so that this increasing trend of STEM enrollments continues in the coming years, in order to meet the growth needs of our country. In particular, to achieve this one needs the effective and valid contributions of women. Therefore it is crucial to give access to women to increasingly important, visible and highly recognized roles. It is precisely on these points that the Equal Opportunities Commission (CPO) of SIF, chaired by Sara Pirrone, will continue to work with increasing commitment.
