Celebrating the ladies of physics

It is well known to our readers that the Italian Physical Society (SIF) follows issues related to students and gender issues very closely, particularly in our field. And so the invitation received by the SIF to participate in the "Women and Physics" event in Palermo on 8 March on the occasion of the International Women's Day (IWD) was much appreciated. The event was desired and happily organised as a result of the collaboration between the AISF (Italian Association of Physics Students) of Palermo, which hosts one of the AISF units with the largest number of members in Italy, the "Emilio Segrè" Department of Physics and Chemistry, and the Pro-Rectorate for Inclusion, Equal Opportunities and Gender Policies of the University of Palermo.

The event aimed to bring the testimony and personal experience of four female scientists, who in their speeches demonstrated how enthusiasm, passion, discipline and commitment are fundamental to undertake physics studies, but also how structural cultural and social actions are still needed to ensure that gender equality is achieved in the scientific disciplines, especially with regard to the top levels of careers.

Greetings from Beatrice Pasciuta, Pro-Rector for Inclusion, Equal Opportunities and Gender Policies, Stefania Milioto, Pro-Rector for Quality, Development and Relations with Departments, and Massimo Palma, Director of the "Emilio Segrè" Department of Physics and Chemistry, opened the meeting.

It was particularly interesting to learn about the Gender Equality Plan (GEP) of the University of Palermo, presented by Beatrice Pasciuta, which can certainly be an inspiration for other universities. This policy document, designed to guide the University of Palermo's policies over the next three years with the aim of reducing the gender gap, was devised by Pasciuta with the support of a specialised working group composed of faculty and staff representatives. The GEP is divided into basic areas concerning measures for the reconciliation of work and family life, the identification of measures to reduce the gender gap both in top government roles and in recruitment and career progression, the enhancement of the gender dimension in research and teaching, and finally measures against discriminatory, harassing and violent behaviour. It envisages concrete objectives and specific actions to achieve them.

The main objective of the event was well met with the subsequent speeches by a group of female researchers representing the world of physics, astrophysics and astronomy: that of Tiziana Di Salvo, astrophysicist, but also delegate of the Department for Inclusion, Equal Opportunities and Gender Policies, that of the undersigned in her double capacity as nuclear physicist at INFN and President of the SIF Equal Opportunities Committee, that of Giuseppina Micela, astrophysicist at INAF and Director of the Astronomical Observatory of Palermo, and finally that of Aurora Piazza, physicist of matter at Leonardo in Palermo. All the researchers presented their experiences with enthusiasm, attracting much attention from those present.

The speeches, as a whole, made us realise that we cannot be distracted by gender issues. In fact, the speakers, with regard to their specific expertise, provided us with numbers and statistics, specific to our profession, which showed us how much has been achieved and conquered, especially in recent times, but how much still needs to be taken care of and followed up for the improvement of the gender situation in these areas.

Undoubtedly, the participation, both of teachers and students of physics in Palermo, was characterised by great attention and involvement. And the meeting was, for the SIF, and not only, a good way of celebrating the International Women's Day and a new incentive to strengthen our commitment to the ladies of physics.
