An App for all

Let us first start with a reassurance: modernisation does not necessarily mean giving up tradition. Many of us keep on their office bookshelves the traditional SIF Congress books of abstracts. And not only because they represent the proceedings of our work, but because they celebrate with their covers the cities that host us, their beauty, but also and above all a belonging to a community that is one of the strengths of the Italian Physical Society. We are talking about a society that is close to two thousand members every year, with a very wide geographical and age spectrum. The first is due to an enviable distribution of academia and research centres throughout the country. The second due precisely to tradition, which ensures that this craftsmanship, such as scientific research, is being transmitted from generation to generation.

The SIF will therefore continue to publish the paper version of the Congress abstracts, but the date planned in Salerno on 11 September 2023 for the inauguration of the 109th SIF National Congress will see a unique novelty: an App dedicated to the Congress that will allow us to share the materials and more general communication with participants.

SIF Eventi will be downloadable for free directly from App Store and Google Play. It will allow us to share the surfable programme of the event, sortable by time and by sections, so that users will be able to view all the details and also create a personalised agenda within the programme. All speakers, authors or simply participants will be able to enter their details, their affiliation, a short biography or their social contacts, depending on what they want to be made public. They will have a list of points of interest, maps of the University of Salerno and a geolocation and navigation function that will help them reach the desired location. As well as a messaging system that will allow participants to communicate with each other, and SIF staff to be able to send notifications for collective communications, such as the start of a plenary section, or a change in the programme. Whether it will work or not, whether it will really be useful and appreciated by our members, is not known until the experiment has begun. The numbers of the 109th National Congress are already speaking: almost 800 submissions, the highest number ever recorded at a SIF Congress in attendance.

The decision to add digital tools such as this App to tradition was not born out of necessity. But from a desire to provide members and participants with a benefit that can amplify participation in the event, encouraging better planning of congress activities and more interaction with other participants.

Just look at the data published in Digital 2023, the We Are Social report that every year summarises people's online behaviours and habits, both globally and nationally, to understand how this App adds value to the congress experience. Although the last few years have been marked by several shocks and changes, first due to health emergencies and then to geopolitical instability, the Italian landscape presents several confirmations and some novelties. The Italian population numbers 59 million people, 86% of whom use the Internet. For the first time since 2013, the data show a 0.3% drop in Internet use: Italians are spending less time online than last year, but a little more time on social networks. The motivations for being online do not change significantly: searching for information is the main purpose for which they connect to the net, particularly using smartphones and other mobile devices. Desktops and laptops (hopefully also those used by the audience during the Congress sessions) drop.

Looking at the data on the reasons why Italians go online, at least three are the ones that make us think that this App will be successful: it will allow participants to quickly find the information they need, to be updated in real time on what is going on, and potentially to get new ideas and inspiration. But we have reason to believe that this last motivation will be, as it is every year, thanks to our scientific community, and not simply to an App.

For those like me who live "on the razor's edge", who struggle with their mobile phone's memory because they don't want to delete videos and photographs, we suggest that you start making room for SIF Eventi. This is because, for the experiment to work, we need your participation as always!
