Ultimissime dalla Società Europea di Fisica

Alla fine di maggio ci siamo ritrovati a Porto per la riunione annuale del Council dell'EPS e in quell'occasione, oltre alle votazioni per i rinnovi del Comitato Esecutivo e del Presidente, ci sono stati illustrati il rapporto delle attività svolte e alcune novità e piani per i prossimi anni.

La nuova Segretaria Generale Anne Pawsey ha iniziato il suo lavoro all'EPS nel 2022 ed è stata riconosciuta la sua ottima partenza grazie al suo forte impegno in questo ruolo centrale per la Società.

Poiché non è possibile riferire e commentare tutti gli argomenti trattati nelle due giornate della riunione a Porto, desidero solo portare alcuni punti alla vostra attenzione, quelli che personalmente ritengo più significativi anche per i loro elementi di novità.

• Il Presidente Luc Bergé ha ricordato che il Forum EPS dello scorso anno a Parigi ha avuto molto successo. Il Forum ha incluso una serie di relazioni plenarie e tavole rotonde su molte tematiche: i) energia e sostenibilità, ii) acceleratori, iii) fisica delle particelle ad alta energia, iv) fisica nucleare, v) tecnologie quantistiche e fotonica, vi) apprendimento automatico e intelligenza artificiale, vii) biofisica, viii) sequenziamento tecnologico di biomolecole e ix) fisica della materia. L'obiettivo raggiunto dal Forum EPS è stato quello di presentare gli ultimi sviluppi in questi campi, e di rafforzare i legami della fisica con l'industria favorendo gli scambi diretti tra maestri e dottorandi, tra dottorandi e interlocutori interessati dell'industria. Un sondaggio tra i partecipanti ha dato una valutazione molto positiva del Forum e ha suggerito di ripetere eventi di questo tipo ogni due anni. Pertanto organizzare periodicamente questi fora costituirà una vera sfida per l'EPS. Il prossimo si terrà alla Freie Universität di Berlino, tra il 25 e il 27 marzo 2024.

• Un gruppo di lavoro nominato ha approfondito le questioni legate alla trasformazione dello Statuto e della struttura dell'EPS. È stata proposta una revisione e un aggiornamento dello Statuto al fine di garantire che l'EPS abbia una struttura coerente con le pratiche moderne adottate delle Società internazionali. La discussione ha evidenziato la necessità di alcuni cambiamenti del documento prodotto prima della sua approvazione finale. Un punto centrale è stato quello della composizione del Comitato Esecutivo per il quale è importante avere una rappresentanza ben distribuita geograficamente e che copra le diverse aree tematiche.

• La relazione del Presidente del Progetto Young Minds ha mostrato che il gruppo è sempre molto attivo e che consta ora di ben 92 sezioni in 37 paesi. Le sezioni ricevono piccoli finanziamenti da utilizzare per outreach, networking e sviluppo professionale. Da quanto riportato queste attività di Young Minds sono sempre molto stimolanti e apprezzate, in particolare dai giovani.

• È stato molto interessante e anche toccante il collegamento via video con i rappresentanti della Società Ucraina di Fisica. Sono state evidenziate le numerose perdite umane tra gli scienziati ucraini, sono state mostrate alcune foto delle distruzioni riguardanti le infrastrutture di ricerca in Istituti e Università. Tutte le attività accademiche nell'area del Donbass sono ferme. La situazione continua a essere tragica e l'EPS continuerà a mantenersi in contatto e a dare voce e aiuto ai colleghi ucraini.

• La riunione si è conclusa con la comunicazione dei risultati delle elezioni: la nuova Presidente Eletta dell'EPS è Mairi Sakellariadou (King's College London) che è stata membro del Comitato Esecutivo e Presidente della Gravitational Physics Division. Anna Di Ciaccio (Università di Roma Tor vergata, già Direttrice della Sezione INFN di Roma 2), Alessandra Fantoni (Laboratori INFN di Frascati e Presidente Eletta della Nuclear Physics Division) e Eugenio Coccia (Gran Sasso Science Institute, ora Direttore dell'IFAE a Barcellona e membro del Consiglio di Presidenza della SIF) sono stati tra i nuovi eletti del Comitato Esecutivo dell'EPS. A loro le nostre congratulazioni e auguri di buon lavoro.

Per il prossimo anno i rappresentanti delle diverse Società di Fisica, compresi quelli della SIF, e delle diverse Divisioni dell'EPS saranno coinvolti a preparare il programma per il secondo Forum EPS, sicuramente molto interessante e stimolante. Vi aspettiamo a Berlino in marzo 2024!

At the end of May we met in Porto for the annual meeting of the EPS Council and on that occasion, in addition to vote for the renewals of the Executive Committee and of the President, the report of the activities carried out was presented together with some news and plans for the next few years.

New Secretary General Anne Pawsey started her job at EPS in 2022 and her good start has been recognized as due to her strong commitment for EPS.

Since it is not possible to report and comment on all the subjects treated in the two days of the meeting in Porto, I would just like to bring to your attention some points, those which I personally consider most significant also for their novelty elements.

• The President Luc Bergé recalled that last year's EPS Forum in Paris was very successful. The Forum included a series of plenary talks and round tables on many topics: i) energy and sustainability, ii) accelerators, iii) high energy particle physics, iv) nuclear physics, v) quantum technologies and photonics, vi) automatic learning and artificial intelligence, vii) biophysics, viii) technological sequencing of biomolecules and ix) physics of matter. The main goal of the EPS Forum was to present the latest developments on these topics, and to strengthen the ties of physics with industry by fostering direct exchanges between masters and PhD students, between PhD students and industry stakeholders. A survey among the participants gave a very positive evaluation and suggested to have such events every two years. Therefore organizing periodically these fora is going to be a real challenge for the EPS. The next one will be held at the Freie Universität in Berlin, between 25 and 27 March 2024.

• An appointed working group investigated issues related to the transformation of the EPS Constitution and structure. A revision and an update of the Statute has been proposed in order to ensure that EPS has a structure consistent with the modern practices adopted by International Societies. The discussion highlighted the need for some changes in the draft document before its final approval. A central point is the composition of the Executive Committee which should have a geographically well-distributed representation and a coverage of the various physics topical areas.

• The Young Minds Project President's report showed that the group is always very active and consists now of 92 sections in 37 countries. Sections receive small grants to be used for outreach, networking and professional development. From what was reported, these Young Minds activities are always very stimulating and appreciated, especially by young people.

• The connection via video with the representatives of the Ukrainian Physical Society was very interesting and also touching. The numerous human losses among Ukrainian scientists were highlighted, some photos were shown regarding the destruction of research infrastructures in Institutes and Universities. All academic activities in the Donbas area are stopped. The situation continues to be tragic and the EPS will continue to keep in touch and give voice and help to the Ukrainian colleagues.

• The meeting was concluded with the announcement of the election results: the new President-Elect of the EPS is Mairi Sakellariadou (King's College London) who was a member of the Executive Committee and Chair of the Gravitational Physics Division. Anna Di Ciaccio (University of Roma Tor Vergata, former Director of the INFN section of Roma 2), Alessandra Fantoni (INFN Laboratory of Frascati and Chair-Elect of the Nuclear Physics Division) and Eugenio Coccia (Gran Sasso Science Institute, now Director of IFAE in Barcelona and member of the SIF Presidency Council) were among the newly elected members of the EPS Executive Committee. Our congratulations to them and best wishes for their future work.

For the next year the representatives of the different Physical Societies, including those of the SIF, and of the various EPS Divisions will be involved in preparing the programme for the second EPS Forum, certainly very interesting and stimulating. We look forward to seeing you in Berlin in March 2024!
