La Francia e l'Italia rafforzano i loro legami

Nel corso della "Cena Fermi" di quest'anno, alla vigilia del 101° Congresso della Società Italiana di Fisica (SIF) di Roma, Alain Fontaine (Presidente della Société Française de Physique, SFP) e io abbiamo discusso la possibilità di istituire un premio internazionale comune alle nostre Società Italiana e Francese di Fisica, per onorare a vicenda illustri fisici che si siano particolarmente distinti nel campo della scienza e nella promozione della collaborazione italo-francese. Siamo stati entrambi molto favorevoli a questa idea che dovrebbe rafforzare i legami tra le nostre Società.

Dal lato SIF, la proposta è stata di intitolare questo premio a Vito Volterra, uno dei fondatori della SIF nel 1897 e uno dei suoi primi Presidenti (1907-1909), i cui rapporti con il milieu scientifico francese sono stati molto significativi. Matematico e fisico italiano, Volterra incontrò Henri Poincaré a Parigi nel 1888, diventando membro della Société Mathématique de France (SMF). Nel corso degli anni stabilì contatti utili e interessanti con la comunità matematica francese, in particolare con Paul Painlevé, Émile Borel e Henri Lebesgue. Inoltre, dal 1921 e fino alla sua morte nel 1940, Volterra fu Presidente del Comité International des Poids et Mesures (CIPM), sotto la cui esclusiva supervisione opera il Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM), con sede a Sèvres.

Di rimando, dal lato SFP è arrivata la proposta di dare a questo premio un doppio nome: "Premio Friedel-Volterra". Jacques Friedel è stato Presidente della SFP (1970) e della Società Europea di Fisica (1982-1984). È stato inoltre un eminente teorico in Fisica della Materia Condensata. Ma quali sono i suoi legami con Volterra? Volterra è all'origine dello sviluppo della teoria delle dislocazioni nei cristalli che doveva poi diventare importante nella comprensione del comportamento dei materiali duttili. E Friedel è stato per l'appunto un esperto di dislocazioni e plasticità in Cristallografia. Si tratta dunque di un binomio davvero appropriato!

Il 16 ottobre 2015, la Direzione della SFP ha approvato l'istituzione del "Premio Friedel-Volterra". Il Consiglio della SIF ha fatto lo stesso il 7 novembre. Il premio consisterà in 3000 €, una medaglia e un diploma. Sarà attribuito per la prima volta nel 2016. Negli anni pari/dispari, un vincitore francese/italiano sarà selezionato dalla Società Italiana/Francese di Fisica, su proposta di candidati da parte dell'altra Società.

L'annuncio di questa iniziativa mi dà l'opportunità di esprimere la forte solidarietà dell'intera comunità dei fisici italiani verso i loro colleghi francesi in questi tempi orribili di terrorismo.

France and Italy tighten their links

During this year's "Fermi Dinner", at the eve of the 101^st Congress of the Società Italiana di Fisica (SIF) in Rome, Alain Fontaine (President of the Société Française de Physique, SFP) and I discussed the possibility to establish a joint international prize between our Italian and French Physical Societies, to alternatively honour distinguished physicists who have been very effective in science and in the promotion of the Italian-French collaboration. We were both very positive about this idea that would tighten the links between our Societies.

On the SIF side, the proposal was to name this prize after Vito Volterra, one the founders of the SIF in 1897 and one of its early Presidents (1907-1909), whose relationships with the French scientific milieu have been very significant. Italian mathematician and physicist, Volterra visited Henri Poincaré in Paris in 1888, becoming a member of the Société Mathématique de France (SMF). Along the years he developed interesting and useful interactions with the French mathematical community, in particular with Paul Painlevé, Émile Borel and Henri Lebesgue. Moreover, since 1921 and until his death in 1940, Volterra has been President of the Comité International des Poids et Mesures (CIPM), under the exclusive supervision of which operates the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) located in Sèvres.

In turn, from the SFP side, came the proposal to give this prize a double name: "Friedel-Volterra Prize". Jacques Friedel has been President of the SFP (1970) and of the European Physical Society (1982-1984). He has also been an outstanding theoretician in Condensed Matter Physics. But what are his links with Volterra? Volterra originally developed the theory of dislocations in crystals that was later to become important in the understanding of the behaviour of ductile materials. And indeed Friedel has been an expert in dislocations and plasticity in Crystallography. Therefore, what an appropriate binomium!

On the 16th of October 2015, the Governing Body of SFP approved the creation of the "Friedel-Volterra Prize". The SIF Council did the same on the 7th of November. The prize will consist in 3000 €, a medal and a diploma. It will be attributed for the first time in 2016. In odd/even years, a French/Italian laureate will be selected by the Italian/French Physical Society, upon a proposal of candidates from the other Society.

The announcement of this initiative gives me the opportunity to express the strong solidarity of the whole Italian physicists' community towards their French colleagues in these horrible times of terrorism.

Pendant le "Dîner Fermi" de cette année, à la veille du 101^e Congrès de la Società Italiana di Fisica (SIF) à Rome, Alain Fontaine (Président de la Société Française de Physique, SFP) et moi avons discuté de la possibilité de créer un prix international commun à nos Sociétés de Physique Française et Italiennne, pour honorer à tour de rôle des illustres physiciens qui se soient particulièrement distingués dans le domaine scientifique et dans la promotion de la collaboration italo-française. Nous avons été tous les deux très favorables à cette idée qui nous permettra de resserrer les liens entre nos Sociétés.
