È passato come un lampo l'Anno della Luce, partito di lontano ...

Era infatti il 2011 quando nell'ambito della Quantum Electronics and Optics Division dell'European Physical Society (EPS) nacque l'idea di un Anno Internazionale proclamato dall'ONU dedicato alla "luce". Trovai l'idea splendida e nella mia veste di Presidente dell'EPS in quel periodo (2011-2013), mi diedi subito da fare.

Per il lancio dell'iniziativa, fu organizzato un memorabile convegno scientifico EPS-SIF dal titolo "Passion for Light" a Villa Monastero, a Varenna, nel settembre 2011. Furono poi necessari notevoli impegno e tempo perché l'idea diventasse realtà. Nel novembre del 2011, la proposta fu approvata dall'IUPAP, nell'ottobre del 2012 dall'Executive Board dell'UNESCO e, finalmente, nel dicembre 2013 dall'Assembea Generale delle Nazioni Unite. L'anno prescelto fu il 2015 e la denominazione: International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015).

Dall'inaugurazione ufficiale dell'IYL a Parigi presso la sede UNESCO nel gennaio 2015, più di 2500 eventi con il logo IYL 2015 hanno avuto luogo in tutto il mondo per celebrare la luce in tutte le sue sfaccettature. In Italia, la SIF ha agito da "hub" per le attività nazionali, in collaborazione con numerose altre istituzioni e società. Quasi 100 eventi ispirati al tema della luce sono stati organizzati, coordinati, patrocinati o segnalati tramite la SIF nell'arco dell'anno. Il bilancio è stato decisamente positivo. Vorrei quindi ringraziare tutti coloro che hanno lavorato con slancio e passione per il successo di questo Anno della Luce.

La cerimonia ufficiale di chiusura dell'IYL 2015 avverrà tra pochi giorni in Messico, a Merida, in un luogo simbolo per la luce e per le più antiche attività dell'intelletto umano legate alla luce.

The Year of Light passed like a flash

The Year of Light, which started far away, passed like a flash ...

It was in fact in 2011 when, in the frame the Quantum Electronics and Optics Division of the European Physical Society (EPS), the idea of a UN-proclaimed International Year dedicated to "light" was put forward. I found this idea wonderful and in my capacity as then President of EPS (2011-2013), I immediately took the deal.

For the launch of the initiative, a memorable scientific EPS-SIF meeting entitled "Passion for Light" was organized at Villa Monastero, in Varenna, in September 2011. Considerable effort and time were then required for the idea to become a reality. In November 2011, the proposal was approved by IUPAP, in October 2012 by the Executive Board of UNESCO and, finally, in December 2013 by the General Assembly of the United Nations. The year chosen was 2015 and the name: International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies (IYL 2015).

Starting from the official IYL inauguration in Paris at the headquarters of UNESCO in January 2015, more than 2500 events with the logo IYL 2015 have taken place all over the world to celebrate light in all its facets. In Italy, the SIF has acted as a "hub" for national activities, in collaboration with many other institutions and societies. Almost 100 events based on the theme of light were organized, coordinated, sponsored or signalled by the SIF along the year. The result was very positive. I would like to thank all those who have worked with passion and enthusiasm for the success of this Year of Light.

The official closing ceremony of the IYL 2015 will take place in a few days in Mexico, in Merida, in a symbolic place for light and for the oldest activities of human intellect related to light.
