Partendo dal successo dell'International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL2015), durante la scorsa estate è stata messa a punto la proposta, da presentare all'UNESCO, di istituire un International Day of Light (IDL).

And now an International Day of Light

Building on the success of the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL2015), a proposal for the institution of an International Day of Light (IDL) was prepared during the past summer, to be submitted to the UNESCO. The purpose of an IDL will be to provide an annual focal point for the continued appreciation of the central role that light plays in science, culture and art as well as in the development of the society at large.

The discussion led to choose, amongst a number of proposals, the date of 16 May, in recollection of the first LASER light obtained by Theodore H. Maiman on 16 May 1960.

In its 200th meeting in Paris, the UNESCO Executive Board adopted on 13 October 2016 the IDL resolution. The official proclamation should take place during the UNESCO General Conference in November 2017. If this will be the case, as it is expected after the Executive Board endorsement, the 16 May 2018 will be the first annual opportunity to work together with UNESCO to promote the importance of the light science and technology.
