In Europa

Nell'arco di due giorni (29 marzo-1 aprile) si è svolto a Erlangen, nei pressi di Norimberga, in un bellissimo e nuovissimo Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light, il Council 2017 della European Physical Society (EPS). Come sempre si è trattato di un importante appuntamento per le Società di Fisica nazionali che fanno parte dell'EPS, durante il quale non sono mancate varie opportunità di aggiornamento e di confronto. Ecco alcuni punti di rilievo.

- "March for Science"
Nata negli Stati Uniti e rapidamente diffusa in tutto il mondo, si tratta di un'occasione, anche per i fisici, per far sentire la propria voce a favore degli irrinunciabili valori della scienza e della ricerca. La SIF, associandosi all'EPS, ha diramato un breve comunicato, in cui esprime il suo convinto sostegno all'iniziativa.

- 50° anniversario dell'EPS nel 2018
La Società si appresta a celebrare un'importante tappa della sua storia. Fondata nell'Aula Magna dell'Università di Ginevra nel 1968 da Gilberto Bernardini, è proprio in quella sede che l'EPS intende festeggiare il suo anniversario. Non è escluso l'abbinamento con una speciale edizione dell'EPS Forum Physics and Society dedicato all'elaborazione di un rapporto sul ruolo e sulle potenzialità della fisica per la società (salute, energia, tecnologia, ecc.), che possa costituire un documento di riferimento ai fini della formulazione del prossimo Programma Quadro per la Ricerca e l'Innovazione dell'Unione Europea.

- International Years e/o International Days
Dopo l'enorme successo nel 2015 dell'International Year of Light (la cui idea è nata all'interno dell'EPS), l'UNESCO ha approvato alla fine del 2016 l'International Day of Light, che si celebrerà ogni anno il 16 maggio a partire dal 2018. Anche altre interessanti proposte sono sul tappeto presso l'UNESCO: quella di un International Year of the Periodic Table of Elements nel 2019 (su proposta IUPAC) e quella di un International Year of Science for Development nel 2022 (su proposta IUPAP).

- Nuove iniziative per EPS Associate Members
L'EPS sta per lanciare nuove forme di associazione per attirare tra i suoi membri un maggior numero di istituzioni, enti, università, aziende, ecc. Si tratta, per esempio, della possibilità di finanziare borse per i giovani o di sponsorizzare nuovi premi nel quadro dei Gruppi e Divisioni dell'EPS. Le iniziative annunciate sembrano promettenti e vanno seguite con attenzione.

- Codice di comportamento
In un'articolata tavola rotonda, si è svolto un vivace dibattito sul ruolo eticamente corretto che la scienza e gli scienziati dovrebbero assumere nell'affrontare questioni di carattere politico e sociale, e sull'eventuale contributo, in termini di "codice di comportamento", che una società scientifica come l'EPS sarebbe in grado di fornire. Sicuramente il tema è molto spinoso in un mondo come quello attuale in continua e rapida evoluzione.

- Cambio di Presidenza
Il 1° aprile, lo svizzero Christophe Rossel ha passato il testimone al tedesco Ruediger Voss che presiederà l'EPS nei prossimi due anni (da aprile 2017 ad aprile 2018). Fisico del CERN e già responsabile delle relazioni internazionali del laboratorio, R. Voss ha decisamente il profilo giusto per guidare l'EPS. A lui il compito di continuare a valorizzarla in Europa e nel mondo, anche tramite celebrazioni del cinquantenario.

Purtroppo ogni numero di SIF Prima Pagina è ormai ineluttabilmente segnato da tragiche notizie di attentati che colpiscono, a turno, Stati membri del CERN o Stati le cui Società di Fisica fanno parte dell'EPS. Questa volta, quindi, è ai colleghi russi, svedesi e francesi che esprimo la solidarietà della SIF.

In Europe

The 2017 Council of the European Physical Society (EPS) took place over two days (March 29th-April 1st) in Erlangen, near Nuremberg, in a beautiful and brand new Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light. As always it was an important event for the national Physical Societies that are part of EPS, during which there have been many opportunities for updating and discussion. Here follow some important points.

- "March for Science"
Born in the United States and quickly spread throughout the world, it is an opportunity, also for physicists, to make themselves heard in favour of the indispensable values of science and research. The SIF, joining the EPS, has issued a brief statement, in which it expressed its strong support for the initiative.

- 50th Anniversary of the EPS in 2018
The Society is preparing to celebrate an important milestone in its history. Established in the Aula Magna of the University of Geneva in 1968 by Gilberto Bernardini, it is in this very venue that the EPS intends to celebrate its anniversary. This celebration could be combined with a special edition of the EPS Forum Physics and Society dedicated to the preparation of a report on the role and impact of physics on society (health, energy, technology, etc.), which may constitute a reference document for the formulation of the next Framework Programme for Research and Innovation of the European Union.

- International Years and/or International Days
After the huge success in 2015 the International Year of Light (whose idea was born inside the EPS), UNESCO approved at the end of 2016, the International Day of Light, which will be celebrated every year on the 16th of May as from 2018 . Also other interesting proposals are on the table at UNESCO: that of an International Year of the Periodic Table of Elements in 2019 (on IUPAC proposal) and that of an International Year of Science for Development for 2022 (on IUPAP proposal).

- New initiatives for EPS Associate Members
The EPS is launching new forms of association to attract a greater number of institutions, organizations, universities, companies, etc. among its members. These consist, for example, in the possibility to fund scholarships for young people or to sponsor new awards within the EPS Groups and Divisions. The initiatives announced look promising and should be carefully followed.

- Code of conduct
In an comprehensive round table, a lively debate took place on the ethical role that science and scientists should play in addressing issues of political and social nature, and on the possible contribution, in terms of the "code of conduct" that a scientific society like the EPS would be able to provide. Surely the issue is very thorny in a world like this, constantly and rapidly changing.

- Change of Presidency
On 1st April, the Swiss Christophe Rossel has passed the baton to the German Ruediger Voss who will chair the EPS over the next two years (from April 2017 until April 2018). CERN physicist and former Head of International Relations, R. Voss has definitely the right profile to lead the EPS. His task will be to continue enhancing it in Europe and around the world, also through the fiftieth anniversary celebrations.

Unfortunately, each issue of SIF Prima Pagina is now ineluctably marked by tragic news of attacks affecting, in turn, CERN member States or States whose Physical Societies are part of the EPS. Hence this time, it is to the Russian, Swedish and French colleagues that I wish to express the solidarity of the SIF.
