Tanti auguri SIF!

120 years of SIF and beyond

The SIF celebrates this year the 120th anniversary of its founding in Rome, in 1897, at the famous Royal Physical Institute in via Panisperna. The first celebratory event planned to highlight this important milestone of its history has been the International Symposium "Passion for Physics" that took place on Saturday, June 24 in Varenna, Lake Como, in the splendid setting of Villa Monastero.

Since 1953, Villa Monastero has hosted the courses of the post-graduate School of excellence of SIF, named after one of the greatest physicists of all times, Enrico Fermi. There are few places in the world like this villa where history, nature, style and beauty blend in an atmosphere that stimulates ideas and creativity, lively exchanges of views, debates and confrontations. Working in such a happy environment is a privilege and a powerful ingredient for the success of courses and events organized therein. For this reason, the SIF has chosen such a magical place to celebrate.

The Symposium was inaugurated by the Local Authorities, the President of the Province of Lecco, Flavio Polano, the Mayor of Varenna, Mauro Manzoni, and personalities of the academic and research world such as the President of the Italian National Research Council (CNR), Massimo Inguscio, the President of the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), Fernando Ferroni, the Rector of the University of Milano Bicocca, Cristina Messa, and the President of the European Physical Society (EPS), Ruediger Voss.

The greeting addresses have strongly emphasized how important it is that SIF, together with the Organizations and Institutions that support it, stimulate and assist this passion for physics, this thirst for scientific knowledge that animates all those people who, very young, young or less young, carry out research in the most diverse areas of physics, and pass it on to the new generations.

During the Symposium, some of the most recent and greatest achievements in physics in all its various theoretical and experimental aspects were illustrated, from gravitational waves, the Big Bang, the origin of time and the dark matter of the Universe, to the quark structure of particles, to neutrinos oscillations, to the atomic structure of matter, to superconductivity, to light and its countless applications, to major projects for new research infrastructures.

To do so, in addition to the illustrious foreign speakers involved, there were several Italian key players in the world of research, including a number of Fermi Prize holders (the most important prize of the SIF, set up in 2001 for the centenary of Fermi's birth and of which Antonino Zichichi was the first winner) namely, besides Massimo Inguscio, Luciano Maiani, Michele Parrinello and Gabriele Veneziano.

Since its founding, a series of 16 Presidents has led the Society, among them Pietro Blaserna (the first one), Vito Volterra, Orso Mario Corbino, Giovanni Polvani, Gilberto Bernardini, Renato Angelo Ricci and Franco Bassani, just to name a few. If initially SIF's life was primarily directed at societal activities, from the 1930-40s, the new generation of physicists, stimulated by brilliant personalities like Enrico Fermi and his group, became more active and numerous, accelerating a wide-ranging development of the Society and of physics in Italy and their inclusion in the international context. Since 1968, SIF has been associated with the European Physical Society (EPS), founded by Gilberto Bernardini himself at the end of his mandate as SIF President. Today the SIF has about 3500 members, one third of whom are women and over half of whom are young (MD students, PhD stuents and post-doc researchers).

A clear SIF's pride is the famous "Enrico Fermi" International School of Physics of Varenna, devoted to the great physicist who held at this School a memorable series of lessons just before his premature passing away. Since then, non stop, SIF has continued to organize every year a series of courses gathering eminent scientists and young researchers from all corners of the planet to study subjects of top scientific relevance in all fields of physics. These courses have been so far over 200, with more than 13,000 scholars participating, including sixty Nobel Prizes. Today, the tradition continues, while maintaining the outstanding quality of the School, and the very prestigious international prestige it enjoys ever since.

During these 120 years, there are many, or rather very many SIF activities and initiatives to tell, which have been and are being carried out, its Awards, its publications, its Congresses ... A good synthesis appears in the booklet Società Italiana di Fisica / Italian Physical Society – 120 anni e oltre / 120 years and beyond that has been recently published.

Varenna's Symposium ended with dusk, with a short but enchanting concert of classical music performed in the garden of Villa Monastero, under the secular cypresses, by a string quartet of young virtuosi. Once in the evening, some of the most significant images of the glorious past of the SIF were projected on the side wall of the Villa. And finally, all out of the program, the night was celebrated by festive fireworks, visible in the distance on the opposite shore of the lake. Happy birthday SIF!
