Questione di genere … e di stile

Molto rumore ha provocato un fisico presentando un contributo al recente workshop "High Energy Theory and Gender" che si è tenuto al CERN dal 26 al 28 settembre. Il titolo del contributo risultava abbastanza integrato rispetto al tema del workshop, altrettanto purtroppo non si può dire del suo contenuto, ovvero dei suoi studi bibliometrici per dimostrare che "gli uomini nella scienza sono discriminati".

Istituzioni e associazioni sono attive da anni in tutto il mondo, per garantire che le donne abbiano in campo scientifico le stesse opportunità degli uomini, contrastando stereotipi e opposizioni e cercando di proporre nuovi modelli sociali per poter superare gli atteggiamenti di discriminazione di genere. Eventi come questo dimostrano che si è sulla giusta strada e che non bisogna assolutamente distrarsi dal cammino.

Magari non ci meravigliamo che Darwin, a fine Ottocento, dichiarasse a proposito delle donne “mi sembra sia molto difficile per loro in base alle leggi dell'ereditarietà diventare intellettualmente uguali all'uomo”.

Magari ci fa sorridere che, ai primi del Novecento, molti congressi scientifici fossero “per soli uomini”.

Difficile è invece leggere nell'attualità che Odifreddi giudica l'attitudine femminile "indirettamente proporzionale all'astrazione", capacità certamente importante nell'ambito delle attività scientifiche.

Quasi insopportabile è poi sentire che un collega affermare, per altro in un evento ufficiale, che le donne in fisica sarebbero meno brave degli uomini per motivi genetici e ormonali (sembra che testosterone e attitudine scientifica siano strettamente correlati!). Sempre lui afferma pure che la questione di genere sia sostanzialmente una costruzione ideologica creata a scapito dei maschi e della verità.

Hanno fatto bene Fabiola Gianotti (Direttore Generale CERN) e Fernando Ferroni (Presidente INFN) a sospenderlo dalle attività nelle proprie istituzioni. Non ha offeso le donne: ha offeso l'intelligenza, le istituzioni, l'impegno di tutti a migliorare il sistema. A questo non si può soprassedere.

Per una bella coincidenza solo qualche giorno dopo è arrivato l'annuncio del Premio Nobel per la fisica attribuito ad Arthur Ashkin, Gérard Mourou e Donna Strickland. Tre scienziati, due uomini e una donna.

Hanno raggiunto straordinari risultati con il loro impegno, la loro creatività, la loro intelligenza. Qualità senza genere, umane e meravigliose.

Much noise was caused by a physicist who participated in the recent "High Energy Theory and Gender" workshop held at CERN from 26 to 28 September.

The title of his presentation rather fit with the theme of the workshop, unfortunately the same cannot be said for its content, namely for its bibliometric analysis to demonstrate that "men in science are discriminated".

Various institutions and associations have been active for years all over the world to ensure that women have the same opportunities in science as men, combating stereotypes and oppositions and trying to propose new social models to overcome gender discrimination attitudes.

Events like this show that we are on the right track and that we should not distract ourselves from the path.

We may not be surprised that Darwin, at the end of the nineteenth century, declared about women "it seems to me it is very difficult for them according to the laws of inheritance to become intellectually equal to man".

It may make us smile that, at the beginning of the twentieth century, many scientific meetings were "for men only".

It is however difficult to read today that Odifreddi judges the feminine attitude "indirectly proportional to abstraction", certainly an important skill in the field of scientific activities.

It is then almost unbearable to hear a colleague stating, moreover in an official event, that women in physics would be less good than men for genetic and hormonal reasons (it seems that testosterone and scientific aptitude are closely related!). He also stated that the question of gender is essentially an ideological construction created at the expense of males and truth.

Fabiola Gianotti (CERN Director General) and Fernando Ferroni (INFN President) did well to suspend him from activities in their institutions. He has not offended women: he has offended the intelligence, the institutions, the commitment of everyone to improve the system. This cannot be overlooked.

Just a few days later, the announcement of the Nobel Prize in Physics attributed to Arthur Ashkin, Gérard Mourou and Donna Strickland came as a happy coincidence. Three scientists, two men and one woman.

They have achieved extraordinary results with their commitment, their creativity, their intelligence.

Qualities without gender, human and wonderful.
